About San Rafael
The town of San Rafael California was once the site of several Native Indian villages. Awani-wi, Ewu, and Shotomko-cha, were all very influential Miwok Native Indian villages, and some of the artifacts can still be seen while in San Rafael California. The town of San Rafael California was founded as the 20th Spanish mission in the colonial Mexican province of Alto California. The almond and mission was founded by for Fathers of the Spanish mission; Father Narciso Duron, Father Abella, Father Luis Gil y Taboada, and Father Junipero Serra created the city and mission and named the town after the Arch-Angel Raphael, who is the ‘Angel of Healing’ in the religion of Christianity.
